PINE MOUNTAIN Pine Mountain was the best place we visited in Southern California. It was just a really great area with super fun problems. The rock is a coarse sandstone but really solid and well worn. It reminded me of the rock of Flagstaff Mt in Boulder, CO only with much higher quality & neat features/cool holds. Whipit (V11) and the amazing sloper problem pictured above were true standouts. The area is nestled in a pine forest with awesome mountain views. I think it is better than Black Mt, but perhaps without as many high quality sick boulder problems. Pine Mt is definitely worth roadtripping to!

This is an easy to find area off of Malibu Creek Canyon Rd. High quality white sandstone that is grippy yet worn with great problems. I only had time to explore, but this one random pullout would have made for a great long session!

THE BRICKYARD SANTA BARBARA, CA You NEED the Ocean's 11 Guidebook. Reminds me of the awesome sandstone of the southeast (HP 40, Rocktown, LRC, Citadel, Hospital Boulders, Shadescrest, and etc). The sandstone of the west coast is impeccable. It seems like an older and dryer rock with finer grains like Fontainbleau. If you've been to Castle Rock, the Brickyard is similar in grain size but more like Joe's Valley in hold variability. The Brickyard is about 3/4 the size of HP 40. There is another area called Lizard's Mouth that is the same size of HP40 and is only 2 minutes away on the same road but different pull-out. That means a ton of frickin' climbing. The summer temperatures weren't too untolerable, but the sandflies were a real drag. I've been told autumn is the perfect time without the little bastards.
